What is perillyl alcohol?
Perillyl alcohol is a chemical that is found in the essential oils of lavender, peppermint, spearmint, cherries, celery seeds, and several other plants. In lab studies, it has been shown to haveanticancer effects by killing cancer cells and blocking the growth of new blood vessels in tumours.
It works by blocking a type of protein in the cell called “Ras” which is involved in signaling the cellto grow. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ras_subfamily In animal studies, it has been shown to shrinkpancreatic, breast and liver tumors. We are using it only to treat brain tumours at this time.Does perillyl alcohol really work? When given as a nasal spray, perillyl alcohol has been shown to shrink brain tumours calledgliomas in humans without any serious side effects. A phase 1 study was conducted of 67 patientswith anaplastic oligodendroglioma). Perillyl alcohol treatment of 440mg per day resulted in markedtumour reduction and improvement in overall survival in over 50% of patients. Invest New Drugs.2009 Jan 13
A more recent clinical trial in 89 patients with glioblastoma multiforme concluded that: “Intranasaladministration of perillyl alcohol increased the overall survival of patients with recurrent GBM incomparison with historical untreated controls, but especially patients with secondary GBM andprimary GBM with tumor localized in deep regions of the brain. The side effects of POH treatmentwere almost nonexistent, even in patients treated for over 4 years.”J Cancer Res Clin Oncol. 2011 Feb;137(2):287-9
Also, a case has been published of a 37 year old glioblastoma patient who has been taking perillylalcohol for over 5 years and has tumour shrinkage demonstrated on her MRI scans. Journal of
Cancer Therapy, 2011, 2, 16-21Is it safe?
The side effects reported in the human trials of perillyl alcohol were mainly related toadministration as a nasal spray (discomfort and irritation of the nose). No toxicity or seriousside effects were noted.
Why is this drug not being used more?
Most doctors are not aware of the promising data on cancer treatment with perillyl alcohol. It is alsodifficult to prescribe non-standard medications (like perillyl alcohol) for cancer due to the largenumber of regulations that must be followed. Since perillyl alcohol is not patentable, there is littlemotivation to conduct expensive Phase 3 trials which would lead to its official approval as a cancertreatment drug.
Is it available?
Yes. Patients seen at Medicor Cancer Centres may be prescribed perillyl alcohol. Medicor hasmade available a specialized liquid formulation of perillyl alcohol that is approved for human use.We only use pharmaceutical grade medications. Since it is a specially compounded medication, itis permitted to use in Canada under a doctor’s orders. Some patients have difficulty tolerating thenasal spray since it causes temporary burning discomfort. We also have an anesthetic nasal spray available to reduce or prevent the discomfort.
Do I qualify for treatment?
We are accepting new patients with gliomas (any type) or other brain tumours who:
• have failed conventional, scientifically proven treatments
• have been told by their doctor that there is no safe / effective treatment for their cancer
• are waiting to start conventional treatment, and would like to do something in the interim
• have voluntarily declined conventional treatment
What is the cost?
Perillyl alcohol treatment at Medicor is approximately $400 for a 2 week supply ofmedication (at a dose of 400mg per day). Anesthetic nasal spray (lidocaine) is about $20for a bottle that will last for 1 month. Please check with the Medicor office for all currentprices.
During the course of treatment, all medically-necessary doctor’s visits, blood tests andimaging are provided/arranged at no cost to the patient (refers to Canadian patients only).
What is the duration of treatment? In order to determine if perillyl alcohol is effective in treating your cancer, we recommend at least 3months of treatment. It may be possible to obtain an MRI after 1 month to look for reduction ofswelling around the tumour as an early sign of response. If a patient responds to the drug, theirtherapy may continue indefinitely.
How do I become a Medicor patient?
If possible, please obtain your pathology report (confirming the diagnosis of cancer and the exacttype), your latest MRI report, and your latest blood test report. If you do not have a pathology report(you did not have a biopsy), a doctor’s note confirming the diagnosis of cancer is acceptable. You can call us at (416) 227-0037 to make an appointment to discuss your individual case. Youcan also contact us through our website at http://www.medicorcancer.com. A valid Health Card isrequired for a free consultation. Canadian patients are only required to pay for the medication, as itis not covered by government drug plans. Private clinic services such as telemedicine are availableto maximize your convenience.
