2. ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (TM)
TM is a non-toxic drug that was developed for the treatment of Wilson’s disease, a condition of copper buildup in the body. It has also been studied in humans and found to stop the growth of various cancers. It has been determined that copper is involved in turning on the process of “angiogenesis” (growth of new blood vessels) which cancerous tumours depend on for growth. TM works by removing copper from the body, preventing tumours from forming blood vessels which prevents their growth. It has also been shown to enhance the effects of chemotherapy with breast cancer and radiation therapy with lung cancer. Click here for details.
3. low dose naltrexone (LDN) and opioid growth factor (OGF)
Naltrexone is a non-toxic drug that blocks the effects of chemicals called opioids (examples: codeine, morphine, oxycodone), and is approved as a treatment for alcoholism. Naltrexone has been used in low doses by Dr. Bernard Bihari (a physician in New York) for treatment of various cancers with over a 60% response, and many remissions.
LDN works by boosting the levels of a natural chemical in the body called met-enkephalin, or OGF. It has been discovered that many cancers respond to the increased levels of OGF, and their growth can be stopped. A human study of OGF in pancreatic cancer showed complete disappearance of liver metastases in 2 out of 16 patients, and an estimated doubling of survival. Patients taking opiate pain killers cannot take LDN, but OGF can be used instead. OGF has also been shown to improve the immune system’s attack on cancer and enhance the effect of chemotherapy. 4. noscapine
Noscapine is a natural non-toxic chemical derived from the poppy plant. It has been used in many countries around the world as a cough medication. When used in higher doses, it has been found to kill human cancer cells in a manner similar to chemotherapy, but without the same toxic side effects. In one study, noscapine was found to have “potent anti-tumour activity” against human breast and bladder cancer implanted into rats. It has also been shown to kill
glioblastoma, melanoma, and taxane-resistant ovarian cancer. One human study of noscapine was conducted in USA, but was terminated due to lack of funding before any results could be published. Click here for details.
5. high dose intravenous ascorbic acid (vitamin C)
Vitamin C has been studied extensively as a potential treatment for cancer. Lab testing shows that in high concentrations, it can have toxic effects on cancer cells while remaining harmless to healthy cells. Definitive human research (i.e. a large randomized trial) has not been done because there is little financial motivation for anyone to conduct such a trial. There is research which shows that taking vitamin C by mouth does not produce the high blood levels needed to induce the death of cancer cells (i.v. dosing is required). In addition, there are some published case reports showing clear cancer remission from vitamin C.
Vitamin C has even been shows to improve the effects of chemotherapy (by acting as a pro-oxidant at high doses) and improve quality of life. Considering the potential benefits and low side effects, this treatment is offered at Medicor under the supervision of Dr. Jill Shainhouse, our naturopathic doctor.
Combination Therapy
For some patients, we may suggest combining 2 or more drugs to improve the chances of treatment success. Combinations are chosen based on scientific theory, medical judgment, and favourable clinical experience. Only anecdotal efficacy data is available on many combination treatments.
